Was I looking forward to the LMFAO show? Sure. My school was hosting this event, they were playing...I'll go and they were a "band" I knew of, whatever. I liked the tunes I had heard by them and I figured they were guys out to have a good time, ok....cool. Would I have called myself a die hard fan? no, not at all. Sorry guys, I hate me too. But that show, that one show changed all of that. I am team LMFAO. Have they named their fans yet? Because I would be what they would name us....Party rockers? Sure. That works. I am a party rocker. Thanks LMFAO.
The show was at the Fox Theater in Pomona, good enough venue for what the show was about, but not the greatest in the LA area. It's obviously an older building, could do with some sprucing up but who really cares...for a $15 ticket to be on the floor by the stage, I wasn't going to complain about the out of date carpet.
Yung Joc opened the show, I remember thinking "I guess I've heard of that guy." He came on stage lip-sync rapped, maybe actually rapped. It wasn't that good either way, so I hope he wasn't actually trying. That would be embarassing. At one point he called for all the 'sexy ladiezzzz' to come on stage for a dance competition. Girls raced to the stage to be the one who wins the...Recognition? Heart? (whatever) of a rapper who hasn't been relevant since his only single has been long since forgotten about. But hey, who am i to judge the girl who decided she had to dance in her panties (note the girl in the panties) to get noticed. I don't know her daddy issues. I don't know her life. But ya, a winner was crowned, or one wasn't (who cares) but I wish I had gotten in there just for the prize: having danced on stage for a crowd of strangers who were only out to judge me and call me a whore. Now that is a prize you can keep for the rest of your life. But yung joc continued his show and then had a twitter competition: first 10 in the crowd to prove they were following him got a prize. People raced to their phones. The prize for the first 10? Having their twitter name read aloud. What a treat...and let's be honest, he only got to 3 people and then got distracted by something shiny and stopped. But forgiving the less interesting parts of his performance, he really did try hard and his dj played songs that got us dancing and excited; I guess he did his job adequately.
When LMFAO came out, it was crazy. I am now an LMFAO fan for life. If you're looking for something that is going to say how lame they are....stop reading, you're going to be disappointed. They were crazy up on that stage. They did whatever it took to get the crowd going and partied hard. Much harder than I ever have, and I thought I liked to party. They took vodka-red bull bongs (really i should say red bull-vodka bongs because they did not skimp on the vodka) on stage throughout the show and then, just to mix things up, set off confetti canons whenever it felt necessary, often. They didn't want to leave us party rockers out of all the fun up there though so they made sure to drench us with as much champagne as possible throughout the night. I loved it. Awesome. Champagne showers, wonderful. Some of the girls around me had clearly not prepared themselves mentally for this show though (Hey bitch, I don't care if the champagne is going to ruin your hair. Get away from the stage if you want to be a loser. kthnkbai).
I love that LMFAO did my favorite song by them (which was a long standing ringtone of mine last year): "I am NOT a Whore" and it was epic. They began the song with a PSA: they know when we ladies are staring at their junk and would to prefer to be treated in a more respectable manner. My bad LMFAO but when it's there....I'm gonna stare. But I'll try to be better, along will all of womankind; so we're sorry LMFAO, we'll try to be less superficial and will try to appreciate you for your bodies as well...I'm willing to be a more accepting person.
If you have the chance, go to an LMFAO show now. Even if you don't like the music, if you just want to have fun. I remember leaving the show thinking, "Gaga should definitely be looking over her shoulder for these two." For those little monsters who will hate me for saying that: I would like to state that I am the most Born This Way-ist little monster around. But dang, LMFAO rocked faces.
If you have the chance watch their video for Champagne Showers, it's pretty hilarious. I would love to run into shuffling Jesus at a Vampire party and have him rescue me with holy champagne.
My first ever post on my first ever blog. I love music, I went to school for it and I love to perform it and see it performed. This blog is going to be about music I love, shows I've been to, and what YOU need to be listening to.
The Pretty Reckless at The El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles on February 11, 2011. The venue, The El Rey, was a very cool spot. The room was shrouded in dark colors and lit by groovy glass chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. The outside marquee was reminiscent of old Hollywood or current Vegas. Flashing lights and a sold out sign plastered across the band names could have come straight out of a movie. This is a spot that I would be more than willing to see more shows at. http://www.theelrey.com/ Opening the night was the band 'A Thousand Horses,' rock music with a bit of a southern swing. Very very good band. If you haven't heard them, or heard of them, check them out. I couldn't believe with how good they were that was the first I was hearing them. My friend who went to the show with me did have one comment that needs to be highlighted, "that is a lot of plaid up there." Lead singer: plaid, bass player: plaid, guitars: plaid, and even an amp had a plaid screen over it; talk about a theme. But hey, overdose of plaid withstanding, this band rocked faces; there was even a harmonica solo that, it could go without saying (but I'll say it anyway), was amazing.
The next band opening for The Pretty Reckless, seemed to have more people in the crowd who knew their songs than A Thousand Horses but, left me wanting. Runner Runner was cookie cutter pop/rock that was neither new nor interesting. Sure the dance beat wasn't bad and I didn't mind how good looking the lead singer was, but that was the most they had going for them. My friends and I questioned each other, how much hair gel does that guy go through in a day? It's definitely a lot. One of their songs is called 'So Obvious' or maybe just 'Obvious' but I couldn't help but think, "exactly." That was exactly what they were, unquestionably exactly what you expect, obvious. At least there was good entertainment value in the drunk girls next to me who were yelling for the lead singer to take off his pants during the performance.
And finally The Pretty Reckless came on, if you aren't listening to this band you need to be. Taylor Momsen came out in what must have been 10 inch heels, and red studded lingerie. My spot, which happened to be right by the stage, gave me a solid view of some of the goods when she was walking out, but she managed to keep them put away for the rest of the show. Which was impressive as she was wearing little more than underwear.
What surprised me by the show was that TayMo could actually sing. Girl had solid pipes. She could move and dance in her shoes and she could sing. Let's just say "wow," as it seems some of the people performing in the Grammys could learn to do the same. Even if you haven't heard of this band, if you can score tickets, do it. It is worth the negligible $15-$25 price tag for general admission. And, contrary to what seems to be popular belief, she wasn't a bitch. All I've ever heard of this Gossip Girl star was that she was a bad girl with a bad attitude, and while I didn't get to meet her (paint me with disappointment), she was very gracious on stage to her fans.
If they schedule another LA show on their tour, I am there again.
